Facilities and Instruments The Bremen Magnetics Lab, founded in 1985 by Ulrich Bleil, commands over supersensitive magnetometers to measure the magnetic remanence, hysteresis and susceptibility of rocks. We can determine sedimentary physical properties by non-destructive core logging both on- and offshore. Our innovative benthic EM profiler NERIDIS III was developed at MARUM to map the magnetic susceptibility and electric conductivity of the seabed. All these facilities can also be used by science and industry partners on cooperation and service terms.

We cover all modern paleo- and rock magnetic methods: Natural and laboratory remanences, magnetic hysteresis, susceptibility and anisotropy, thermomagnetics at low (4-400K) and high (270-800K) temperatures and fields up to 7T, FORC analyses, REM of magnetic extracts. more »
Core Logging in the Lab and at Sea Team:Thomas Frederichs (Lab Manager), Christian Hilgenfeldt (System Engineer), Liane Brück (Lab Technician), Heike Piero (Data Management) Techniques: Sediment physical properties such as susceptibility, conductivity, porosity, density, sound velocity, and color are controlled by sediment composition and fabric. These parameters are fundamental as well for geophysical exploration as for the description, correlation and stratigraphy of sediment cores. We conduct core logging and imaging on board of reserach vessels and in our own core logging laboratory. more »
Shallow and Deep Marine Electromagnetics Team:Hendrik Müller (Project Leader, now at BGR), Christian Hilgenfeldt (System Engineer), Tilo von Dobeneck (multi sensor concepts) Technique: Marine Electromagnetics (EM) is an emerging active method to detect seabed potential field anomalies at different scales. These data help to assess hydrocarbon and mineral reservoirs, fresh water seeps or melting zones. We developed the benthic EM profiler MARUM Neridis III to map the magnetic susceptibility and electric conductivity of the surficial seabed sediments to deduct their composition, porosity, stratification and formation conditions. mehr »
Field and Marine Magnetics TeamThomas Frederichs, Tilo von Dobeneck Techniques: Equipped with modern Overhauser magnetometers and gradiometers, we can conduct magnetic surveys at land and in the shallow sea. We also command over professional software for field data processing and interpretation. These systems are extensively used in our field courses and study projects, e.g. for archeological, structural, engineering and marine geology topics. more »
