Research

Research Methods and Areas
We combine methods of paleo-, rock and environmental magnetism, electromagnetics and sediment physics to analyze the composition, age, provenance and diagenesis of marine sediments. In the coast and shelf zone, we investigate how sediments are being sorted and distributed. We analyze deep sea and continental margin sediments to reconstruct variations of ocean circulation, of climate and of the Earths magnetic field. We explore the physical and mineralogical fundamentals of rock magnetism, develop new exploration methods for marine freshwater seeps and mineral ressources and offer competent Geo Consulting services related to applied magnetic methods.

Coast and Shelf
Scientists: Tilo von Dobeneck, Tobias Kulgemeyer, Wei Leng, Hendrik Müller (BGR)
Methods: Enviromagnetics, Electromagnetics, Hydroacoustics, Sedimentology
Projects: MARUM SD1, MARUM SD2, INTERCOAST, ArcTrain
Topics: Large spatial variations in magnetic and heavy mineral content are typical for sublittoral sediment facies. These patterns reflect modern sediment dynamics driven by waves, tides and currents as well as relict structures of past sea-level change and glaciation. With enviromagnetic and electromagnetic methods we can map these structures to reveal sediment facies, sources, transport pathways and fractionation mechanisms. more »

Ocean and Climate
Scientists: Janna Just, Thomas Frederichs, Edoardo Dallanave, Tilo von Dobeneck
Methods: Enviromagnetics, Magnetostratigraphy, Core Logging, Sedimentology
Projects: MARUM OC, INOPEX, IODP
Topics: Changing continental, oceanic and sedimentary environments modify the magnetic composition and grain-size as well as color and porosity of ocean sediments. Based on rock magnetic and physical properties measurements we can reconstruct formation conditions, redox history and age of the deposits in high detail. more »

Paleomagnetism
Scientists: Edoardo Dallanave, Thomas Frederichs, Janna Just, Xuesen Li, Tilo von Dobeneck
Methods: Magnetostratigraphy, Relative Paleointensities, Cyclostratigraphy
Projects: INOPEX, IODP
Topics: Geomagnetic pole positions, field intensities and polarities vary at time scales between 100 and 1.000.000 years. Sedimentary records of these changes form the basis of three paleomagnetic methods - paleosecular variation, relative paleointensity and magnetostratigraphy - which enable us to date sediment sequences of continental margins as well as deep sea basins. more »

Rock Magnetism
Scientists: Thomas Frederichs, Wanzhang Wang, Janna Just, Tilo von Dobeneck
Methods: Magnetic Remanence, Hysteresis and Susceptibility, Thermomagnetics
Projects: DFG PP 1097, DFG Project BL 154/24, EUROPROX
Topics: All magnetic methods in geophysics rely on less than ten natural iron minerals, which all have complex and characteristic ferromagnetic properties. We command over a range of highly sensitive automated instruments to determine composition, concentration, grain-size and oxidation state of magnetic mineral assemblages in sediments and rocks. more »

Marine Magnetics
Scientists: Hendrik Müller (BGR), Christian Hilgenfeldt, Thomas Frederichs, Tilo von Dobeneck
Methods: Marine Electromagnetics and Magnetics, Rock Magnetics
Projects: BGR GoldenEye, BGR INDEX
Topics: Marine mineral resources such as hydrothermal polymetallic sulphides, ferromanganese crusts, iron and phosphorite sands stand out by their deviant magnetic and/or conductive properties. We develop and deploy electromagnetic subsea survey systems for the research and exploration of precious mineral deposits from coast to deep sea. Integrated benthos cameras assess the morphology and colonization of the seafloor. more »
